Are there Specific Laws and/or Regulations for reality TV Shows

By Amy Nutt

When participants sign on to be a part of a reality TV show, they sign contracts and are then bound by the terms of the contract. If the participants violate the terms of the contract, then they risk being kicked off of the show. This is what binds the participant. However, there are laws and regulations which govern reality TV shows. This may be hard to believe since many reality TV shows seem cutthroat, but contestants are aware of the type of TV show they are taking part in and they agree to such treatment in their contracts because that is what makes the show interesting.

The FCC regulates what we see on TV, but the shows are prohibited from rigging of any kind, exploiting children, and other such things as nudity and language that are not censored. Those are your standard FCC regulations. However, there have been statements that have claimed that the show Survivor is not subject to game show regulations set forth by the FCC.

Such rules set forth by the FCC involve the Prime Time Access Rule and the Financial Interest and Syndication Rules, which has a large effect on game shows. What the first rule does is give total control of a certain time slot to a local station to do what they please and the second rule gives the producers limited ownership of a program after its initial run. However, these rules don't really interest the public. What interests the public are the censorship rules.

Regarding the claim that Survivor is not subject to the game show regulations of the FCC is contradictory to what the show has claimed. The FCC rules are mostly effective in the areas of censorship and making sure that there is no rigging going on although the above applies as well. They say that reality shows do not leave much room to cheat anyway despite what some may believe. If the FCC caught reality shows rigging, the reality shows would be severely fined. If the contestants found out that the shows were being rigged, then the shows would be facing numerous lawsuits.

Lessons were learned many years ago from such shows as Quiz Show where the producers were feeding the questions and the answers to the contestants before they went on the show. If the audience loved a particular contestant, the producers wanted to make sure that contestant stuck around for a while. Once the ratings would fall, the process would start all over again so that the audience would once again fall in love with a particular contestant.

However, when we look at the reality shows of today, we may absolutely enjoy a particular contestant for them to get voted off. That hardly constitutes any type of rigging because the show is risking viewership if a beloved contestant is gone. The FCC regulates how these shows conduct themselves and they make sure that everything is done fairly to the best of their ability because, if the show is found out, the show risks everything, including their reputation. If they risk their reputation, then they lose viewership. When a show loses viewership, they are then taken off of the air and placed into syndication if they're lucky. Some reality shows have been on the air for so long that it would be a shame for such things to happen, but scandal does occur and solutions must be reached. However, sometimes it is the scandal that brings even more viewers to a show than ever before. But if the show is deceiving their viewers, then viewers feel violated.

HNE Castings: How to Prepare for Reality TV Show Auditions

By Amy Nutt

Part of the appeal that has reality TV shows so intriguing is the fact that the characters are true-life people, folks who could be your neighbors or co-workers. This engages the audience in a way that not only allows them to relate to the characters, but also makes them feel as if they too could be a television star by being on one of these shows.

Many people in fact do want to be on a reality television show and would like to know how, when and where they can audition to be on shows like The Biggest Loser, The Bachelor and others. Below are some tips on how to prepare for your reality TV show audition.

Get Started

Several reality shows allow candidates to apply online or by mail. For other shows, you must make a videotape of yourself and send it in. There are many reality shows that require that you audition in person. In order to start preparing for the audition process, you?ll need to find all the details of that process. Start by looking at the TV network Web sites for reality TV show casting information. One of these is Hne Castings

When and Where?

There are many online sources for finding out when and where live auditions are held for reality shows. Some blogs or audition sites list audition schedules for multiple reality shows. If you are interested in a specific show only, for example The Amazing Race, you could go to the Web site of the TV network that the show is on to find audition information. Once you know when and where auditions are, you?ll need to figure out the logistics of being available for and getting to the audition. There may not necessarily be an audition in your home town or city. In this case, you?ll need to arrange travel to the nearest audition site.

Know Your Story

Whether you are applying to be on a reality TV show online, through the mail, or showing up to a live audition, you must prepare by knowing what you will say about yourself. You will need to portray yourself as an interesting person. Start by brainstorming a list of as many different facts about yourself as you can possibly think of. Include places you've live, places you've been, accomplishments you've made, anything at all that makes you interesting. After that, narrow it down to 5-10 interesting tidbits that you can memorize and speak about on demand.

Make for Good Drama

Many of today's reality shows claim they're not casting to fill niches or to create conflict. Despite those claims anyone who has seen more than one episode of any reality show can tell this is not always true. The fact is, reality TV must have some drama in order to be interesting and engaging. Casting people that are likely to create interesting types of conflict ensures this element will be covered. You can use this to your advantage. First off, make sure to keep it real. Don't lie or grossly exaggerate. Think about your opinions and outlooks on controversial matters. Play up certain things about your lifestyle that may clash with that of someone else. Play up certain things about you that make you likely to fill a certain niche.

Confidence is Key

In conclusion, once you have found out all the details about the audition, prepared and memorized your "story", and strategized your drama factor, focus on your confidence. You must come across as someone outgoing who is not afraid to be themselves and be outspoken. If nothing else, focusing on this will give you the greatest chance of being cast on a reality TV show.

Lindsay Lohan ... Her Story

By Dylan Richkards

Lighting up screens at the age of 3, Lindsay should have been informed on the dangers of showbiz life. Ever since Lindsay moved to LA, she seems to be losing control.

Lindsay started out as a Ford model in New York where she was born. After her debut, Lindsay went on the appear in over 60 television commercials. Finally in 1996, she made her first appearance as an "actress" on Another World.

Next on Lindsay list was a remake of the film the Parent Trap in 1998. It wasn't until 5 years later that she appeared in another major film, Freaky Friday. One year later, Lindsay moved to L.A. and things began to fall apart.

Lindsay seems to rub people the wrong way, well when it comes to men anyways. Lindsay's four year feud with Hillary Duff is over Aaron Carter. Also the feud with Ashlee and Jessica Simpson over Wilmer Valderrama dates back to 2004.

Lindsay admitted in 2005 that she was a victim of belemia which caused her to lose a lot of weight. Lindsay was just then releasing "Mean Girls," which took her to the next level.

Lindsay was in two car crashes in 2005, which was apparently caused by the paparazzis. In 2006 Lindsay was told that she was being unprofessional for showing up to work late a couple of times. While back in New York, Lindsay broke her wrist while clubbing with friends.

Lindsay began attending AA meetings in December of 2006 after much criticism. Apparently this didn't take since she was arrested two times on drunk driving charges. She was sentenced to jail for 1 day, a community service order and an 18 month alcohol education program.

Lindsay has been trying to fly under the radar since then. She is now filming "Labor Pains" which is speculated to have a fairly large release. Her next progress hearing is set for January 2009.

The Excellent Entertainment Provided By WWE Divas

By Russell M. Stewart

There cannot be too many compliments that mean more than 'diva'. If a woman is called a diva, she is being called divine, because the root of diva is the Latin 'divus', or divine. It celebrates how talented and outstanding the woman is. Singers, stars, artists are all referred to as divas, and now, so are the beauties of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

Among the sexiest female celebrities in the world, WWE divas are also among the most entertaining athletic performers of the new era. The best known WWE divas of our time include Candice Michelle, Maria Kanellis, Torrie Wilson, Jillian Hall, Melina Perez, Beth Phoenix and Victoria. Intense training is very much a part of their daily lives and they are quite adept at putting on a thrilling and energised show for the audience.

WWE divas were not always the centre of attention. The earlier divas were managers, who earned the complimentary title after several years of service. They were there to provide valet-ringside managerial services for professional male wrestlers, such as Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels and Macho Man Randy Savage. The most notable early-day WWE divas are Miss Elizabeth, Sensational Sherri Martel, Tammy Lynn Sytch (Sunny), Rena Mero (Sable), Terri Runnels and Trish Stratus. The latter two entered the arena as managers and later became pro wrestlers themselves.

Divas have come and gone and it's been rough-and-tumble for them throughout the years. The most famous WWE title for female wrestlers is appropriately named WWE Women's Title. These WWE divas have made women's wrestling so popular that ambitious young contestants flock the annual WWE Diva Search competition with hopes of becoming the next diva.

WWE divas participate in regular wrestling entertainment events, such as Smackdown, Raw, ECW and Pay-Per-View. The wrestling has also taken a more unconventional form, with pudding and gravy bowl matches, lingerie pillow fights and bikini battle royals. These wrestling divas attract many wrestling fans and casual observers, because of their eye-appeal.

Mickie James, one of the toughest female wrestlers, is the WWE Raw Women's Champion. She won the championship on the 14th of April, 2008.

The Raw, SmackDown and ECW are the main three brands promoted by WWE, which is focused on professional wrestling of every type. Pro wrestling is known to be a simulated sport, a combined art containing athletic wrestling and theatrics. WWE holds great importance in the world's sporting arena and is the largest professional wrestling promoter.

Create Your Own ABBA Costumes

By Fred Tellier

Dressing up in costumes is popular with everyone, regardless of age. Young children might want to dress as an animal or ghost for a trick or treat outing. Adults and teens also enjoy costume parties. If you are going to a party in a group, it is a lot of fun to dress up as members of a well-known band. Depending on how many men and women there are in your group and the total number, there are various bands to go for. One great idea is to wear ABBA costumes. You might think it is difficult to get ABBA costumes and go to a fancy dress party as this well-known Swedish band, but it is easier than you might think.

Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus are the male vocal half of ABBA if you plan to go to a party with another guy friend and you are a male. Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstand are the rocking girl couple if you are not able to bring four people to the party.

There are many specialty shops and seamstresses that are willing to make ABBA costumes for you and your friends. If you have money but are low on time, this is the best way to go to find ABBA costumes for you and your group.

However, if time is not an issue, you will find that making your own ABBA costumes is a very rewarding and fun activity. To make your ABBA costumes, you have to know how to make, follow, and sew patterns into clothing. This will represent the type of clothing that ABBA wore. It is also a good idea to find a specific material that matches the bands. You should also measure each person who is going to be dressing up in an ABBA costume so that the costume does not turn out to be too big or too small. ABBA costumes can be quickly thrown together from items that are found in your local stores. You don't have to buy new items that you will never use again. Buying new things is the worst way to make an ABBA costume. It is best to be unique.

Why not check out thrift stores like Goodwill? This will keep your costs low and might lead to some amazing discoveries. Even if you don't find an exact ABBA costume, you might find some old-fashioned clothing which can be adapted. If you can find some suitable bits and pieces, you can buy and wash them then combined them for a great ABBA costume. Alternatively, you might need to dye several piece to make them match, but this is very easy. When you buy items from a thrift store, they are usually only a couple of dollars each. You can feel free to cut them or adjust them to make these items into a complete new costume.

The plain clothes that are worn are very easy to imitate. Sometimes things such as vests and headbands need to be made. The harder costumes are the shiny ones. However, often times there are 70s clothing or disco costume items at thrift shops. It is important to look in different areas rather than just the normal clothing to find what can be made into new clothes. It is also important to look at children's and baby clothes because these things can often be cut and made into new items such as headbands and wrist bands. The colors found there are often the ones that are needed. If not, these things can be dyed or drawn on to make what is needed.

You will need to think about a dye or wig for your hair. ABBA costumes use natural hair colors so a wig might be easier, especially if your hair has been lightened or is porous, meaning a rinse-out dye might not rinse out immediately!

The platform shoes might be the most difficult part of your ABBA costume. You should start your search for ABBA style platform shoes months before the event, if you have that much time to plan. Once you have your ABBA costumes ready, you will definitely have fun and draw lots of admiring glances at the party!

WWE Divas - Entertainment Par Excellence

By Russell M. Stewart

If you refer to a woman as a 'diva', it's the highest compliment you can pay her. It means she's talented, outstanding and praise-worthy. The word 'diva' is derived from the Latin 'divus', translating to 'the divine'. Most famous celebrities are often referred to as divas and as of recent times, so are the lovely women of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

WWE divas are beautiful, sexy and strong - a potent combination. Just to name some, Beth Phoenix, Torrie Wilson, Melina Perez, Maria Kanellis, Victoria and Jillian Hall are some of these lovely ladies, who step into the ring night after night and risk life and limb with some spectacular and physically demanding moves, at the same time managing to look stunning.

But WWE divas did not always put on a show this way. Though they were always lovely, their in-ring action used to be severely limited. They used to act as valets to popular male competitors, accompanying them to the ring and often, giving them some, not strictly legal, but infinitely entertaining, help. Stars like the Heart Break Kid Shawn Michaels, Hulk Hogan and Macho Man Randy Savage had valets of this sort. The first WWE divas to garner attention as wrestlers were the likes of Trish Stratus, Sensational Sherri Martel, Miss Elizabeth, Sunny, Sable and Terri Runnel. Terri and Trish became celebrated as pro wrestlers in their own right.

Unlike male superstars, the ring life for divas is usually much shorter. The best is acknowledged with the WWE Women's Title. Now, the glamour and strength of the WWE divas is so appealing that every year, the WWE Diva Search attracts thousands of hopeful young ladies.

The current WWE Raw Women's Championship title is held by Micki James, which was awarded to her on the 14th April 2008.

By Jane Leisteiner

Okay, so you may never get to meet Meryl Streep, Ron Howard, Cybill Shepherd, Larry Csonka, Danny Glover, Meg Ryan, or Captain Kirk (a.k.a. William Shatner) in person. But you can stay at the very same bed and breakfast inns that they stayed at, and have just as good a time as they did!

Maine's restful Inn at Long Lake is a favorite haunt of actress Meryl Streep and her daughters. Located in Naples, Maine, this 1900s-era Victorian B&B inn features graceful veranda appointed with wicker chairs with beautiful views of Long Lake. Once inside, you'll find stained glass windows, period antiques, fresh flowers, and a wonderful collection of old clocks. The Inn at Long Lake has 16 rooms, each decorated with Victorian-themed floral wallpaper and antique furniture. Find out for yourself why Meryl Streep is a repeat visitor!

Just outside of downtown Baltimore, you'll find Grammercy Mansion, a historic Tudor-style gem with 11 lavish guest rooms and suites. Director and Oscar-winner Ron Howard is among the notable guests to have spent the night at this bed and breakfast. The individually decorated rooms range from the sunny Blue Garden room which evokes the feeling of 18th-century France with its antique Louis XIV furnishings and marble fireplace to the extravagant Tudor Room that reminds one of an opulent suite at an English castle. Whatever the choice, guests will feel as pampered as a celebrity with gourmet breakfasts and posh surroundings.

If you crave a little star treatment, pick the bed and breakfast that once pampered actress Cybill Shepherd. The Swann House B&B in Washington, D.C.'s Dupont Circle boasts a dozen stylish guest rooms. Guests are pampered with champagne breakfasts, down pillows and featherbeds. Many rooms include a fireplace or whirlpool bath. The Il Duomo is a perfect spot for a romantic getaway, and the charming Blue Sky Suite is another favorite. Why not treat the man in your life to a lodge vacation that indulges his passion for fishing, hiking, canoeing or just relaxing and enjoying the natural setting of the Blue Ridge Mountains. NFL Super Bowl Champ Larry Csonka is among the rugged guests at the Bent Creek Lodge in Asheville, North Carolina. The bed and breakfast offers close access to all the outdoor amenties, as well as wide veranda lined with rockers and swings where guests can simply enjoy the view. Several guest rooms include a whirlpool tub. Each morning, guests are treated to a sumptuous full breakfast. For a family retreat, consider renting the adjacent Luhn House, which offers three bedrooms, two full baths, a fireplace, fully-equipped kitchen, laundry facilities and a deck and hot tub.

With its country charm and great food, it's no wonder that guests such as actor Danny Glover feel right at home at the Apple Country Bed and Breakfast in Wenatchee, Washington. From the apple-named guest rooms, such as the Fuji or Golden Delicious, to the plentiful breakfasts, guests will find the cozy bed and breakfast a great place to relax after a day of skiing, biking or hiking. The Washington State Apple Blossom Festival is a popular event each May, and there are several local wineries to visit, as well.

Meg Ryan and William Shatner are among the famous celebrities that have graced the rooms at the Aaron Burr House Inn & Conference Center in New Hope, Pennsylvania. The 1873 inn rests atop the site of a Revolutionary War-era home where Aaron Burr actually hid out after his notorious duel with Alexander Hamilton. Victorian charm abounds in the guest rooms, some of which include antique canopy beds. The guest room walls have been stenciled and hand painted by a local artist.

A Short History Of Country Group Dixie Chicks

By E Walker

The Dixie Chicks are a country/rock music trio from the United States comprising Emily Robison, Martie Maguire and Natalie Maines. They are the highest-selling female band in any musical genre, having sold 36 million albums as of June 2006.

The Dixie Chicks was founded by the sisters Martie and Emily Erwin along with Laura Lynch and Robin Lynn Macy. The Erwin sisters have since married and changed their names to Martie Maguire and Emily Robison, respectively. The Erwin sisters provided the instrumental firepower for the band while Lynch and Macy were the lead singers. All four original members of the Dixie Chicks graduated from Greenhill School in Addison, Texas, a suburb of Dallas.

Robin Lynn Macy left in late 1992, for a "purer" bluegrass approach, and remained active in the Dallas music scene.

Laura Lynch was replaced in late 1995 by Natalie Maines, the daughter of producer, steel guitar player, and former Chicks' session player Lloyd Maines. Around the same time, Sony scouted the Chicks and signed them to the newly revived Monument Records label."Wide Open Spaces" (1998), is the first album released after the original lead vocalist Laura Lynch was replaced by Natalie Maines, the album was the biggest commercial success and sold 12 million copies in U.S.

The Chicks also delivered gleeful revenge epics such as "Goodbye Earl," the tale of a woman who murders her abusive husband and gets away with it, or raucous, ribald numbers such as "Sin Wagon," a concert staple rave-up. Both of these tracks contained thematic elements that led to some radio stations removing the Chicks from their playlists, but the group was consistently unapologetic.

The Dixie Chicks became involved in a dispute with their record label regarding royalties and accounting procedures. After the trio quit in disgust, Sony sued the group for failure to complete their contract. The group countersued.

After the two parties reconciled their differences, Home, independently produced by Lloyd Maines, was released in 2002. For tracks not written by the group, outside songwriters were solicited for personal songs that were considered "uncommercial". Unlike the Chicks' two previous records, Home was recorded without drums and is dominated by very up-tempo bluegrass and pensive ballads. In addition, the lyrics of the opening track and first single, "Long Time Gone," explicitly attacked contemporary country music radio, accusing it of ignoring the soul of the genre as exemplified by Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and Hank Williams.

Maines' remark sparked intense criticism; many Americans believed that she should not criticize George Bush. Maines insists, however, "I said it there 'cause that's where I was."

By the time of the Dixie Chicks' August 3 Atlanta show, Maines remarked that they had not heard any boos for a couple of shows; some were heard that night, but the Chicks felt that it was okay, as they supported freedom of speech.

In a September 2003 interview, Maguire told the German magazine Der Spiegel: "We don't feel a part of the country scene any longer, it can't be our home anymore." She noted a lack of support from country stars, and being shunned at the 2003 ACM awards. "Instead, we won three Grammys against much stronger competition. So we now consider ourselves part of the big rock 'n' roll family." However, in an open letter to fans on the Chicks' website, Maines said Maguire had been misquoted.

In June 2006 an article in the Telegraph quoted Emily Robison on the lack of support from other country music performers, "A lot of artists cashed in on being against what we said or what we stood for because that was promoting their career, which was a horrible thing to do." Robison continued, "A lot of pandering started going on, and you'd see soldiers and the American flag in every video. It became a sickening display of ultra-patriotism." Maines commented, "The entire country may disagree with me, but I don't understand the necessity for patriotism. Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why? You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the whole country ... I don't see why people care about patriotism."Wikinews has related news:Dixie Chicks show documentary at TIFF

The group's Accidents & Accusations Tour began in July 2006. Ticket sales were strong in Canada and in some Northeastern markets, but notably weak in other areas. A number of shows were cancelled or relocated to smaller venues due to poor sales, and in Houston, Texas, tickets never even went on sale when local radio stations refused to accept advertising for the event. In August, a re-routed tour schedule was announced with a greater emphasis on Canadian dates, where Taking the Long Way had gone five-times-platinum. The tour's shows themselves generally refrained from any explicit verbal political comments, letting the music, especially the central performance of Not Ready to Make Nice, speak for itself. At a Nov. 5, 2006 concert in Calgary, Alberta the Chicks received a thunderous ovation when the song was over, and the band held up a handwritten sign from a fan that read "Nobody likes a nasty Bush."

The music video for "Not Ready to Make Nice" was nominated for the 2007 CMT Music Video Awards in the categories of "Video of the Year" and "Group Video of the Year," however, the video did not win in its nominated categories.

Celebrities info

Part two of this report is a candid look at celebrities in the Church of Scientology: how they are recruited, how they are used, and how they are controlled. It explores how the secret society of Scientology is trying to take over and control large numbers of Hollywood celebrities to use Hollywood's media influence as leverage to recruit new unsuspecting members from the public.

One of the few people who enjoys (if that's the word) regular contact with celebs is Drew Pinsky, cohost of the show Loveline. Since celebrities frequently appear as guests on the show, Pinsky -- who is actually a physician and, in theory, a researcher -- realized he had a golden opportunity to collect data on them. So he decided to measure their narcissism levels, by asking them to fill out the Narcissism Personality Inventory, the defining test of this personality trait. Over a 20-month period, Pinsky got 200 actors, comedians, musicians and reality-TV stars to complete the survey.

According to Hubbard, Scientologists should target prominent individuals as their "quarry" and bring them back like trophies for Scientology. "If you bring one of them home you will get a small plaque as a reward," Hubbard wrote in a Scientology magazine more than three decades ago. Although the original effort faded, the idea of using celebrities to promote and defend Scientology survived and is now being expanded though Hubbard's successor David Miscavige. 23

Celebrities are considered so important to the movement' s expansion that the church created a special office to guide their careers and ensure their "correct utilization" for Scientology. The church has created a special branch that ministers to celebrities, providing them with first-class treatment. Its headquarters, called Celebrity Center International, is housed in a magnificent old turreted mansion on Franklin Avenue, overlooking the Hollywood Freeway.

A celebrity is a widely-recognized or famous person who commands a high degree of public and media attention. The word stems from the Latin verb "celebrere" but they may not become a celebrity unless public and mass media interest is piqued. For example Virgin Director Richard Branson was famous as a CEO, but he did not become a global celebrity until he attempted to circumnavigate the globe in a hot air balloon. Another example is Al Gore, whose environmental crusade has elevated him to celebrity status. On the other hand, mass entertainment personalities such as soap opera actors or music stars are likely to become celebrities even if the person deliberately avoids media attention.

Celebrities are of vital use in Scientology for numerous purposes: to recruit the masses, to endorse L. Ron Hubbard's teachings, to give Scientology greater acceptability in mainstream America and to forward Scientology's secret goals of world control. In a society that often equates celebrity with credibility, using highly recognized celebrities to help hide, deflect or overcome Scientology's horrendous public relations problems is understandable.

The roles that celebrities play in Scientology are dictated by a series of Scientology policies called the Opinion Leader Policies that were written by Hubbard. These policies state that you need to get your people into the power points in society, (points where you are the opinion leader or you control the opinion leader.) The Celebrity Center Program is nothing more than an extension of Hubbard's plan of world domination by taking over or controlling opinion leaders.

In Hollywood these days, green does not refer only to box-office totals, but to the environmental movement and its celebrity component. In politics, celebrities can have a toxic effect.

The rise of international celebrities in acting and popular music is due in large part to the massive scope and scale of the media industries, enabling celebrities to be viewed more often and in more places. The reach of entertainment products is further extended by large-scale illegal copying of movies and music, which makes inexpensive pirated versions of DVDs and CDs available throughout even less economically developed countries.

The research data were collected anonymously and confidentially from celebrities selected at random during guest appearances on the nationally syndicated Westwood One radio show "Loveline," based at the KROQ-FM radio station in Los Angeles. The celebrities were administered the NPI test during breaks on the show, which Pinsky has hosted for the past 20 years. 43

Each culture and region has its own independent celebrity system, with a hierarchy of popular film, television, and sports stars. Celebrities who are very popular in one country might be unknown abroad, except with culturally-related groups, such as within a diaspora. In some cases, a country-level celebrity might command some attention outside their native country, but not to the degree that they can be considered a global celebrity. For example, singer Lara Fabian is widely-known in the French-speaking world, but only had a couple of Billboard hits in the U.S., whereas singer Celine Dion is well-known in both communities. 1

In the current media environment, a symbiotic relationship between celebrities and cause clbres has developed. Celebrities have a comparative advantage over policy wonks because they have access to a wider array of media outlets, which translates into a wider audience of citizens. Superstars can go on The Today Show or The Late Show to plug their latest movie and their latest global cause. Because of their celebrity cachet, even hard-news programs will cover them?stories about celebrities can goose Nielsen ratings. With a few exceptions, like Barack Obama or John McCain, most politicians cannot make the reverse leap to soft-news outlets. Non-celebrity policy activists are virtually guaranteed to be shut out of these programs. 26

Scientology also helped Lisa Marie Presley arrange her marriage to Michael Jackson. The idea was to make Jackson a Scientologist so he would become a recruiter and bring large numbers of youth into Scientology. While she was working on Michael Jackson, Presley inconveniently was already married, and to a Scientologist staff member. Scientology quickly ordered a divorce, so the Michael Jackson recruiting plan could go forward.

The power of soft news is not limited to television. Vanity Fair let Bono guest-edit a special issue about Africa, knowing that cover photos of Madonna and George Clooney would attract readers and buzz. Without intending to, those perusing the pages might form opinions about sending aid to sub-Saharan Africa in the process. Similarly, celebrity blogs can garner higher amounts of traffic.

In a smaller country, linguistic or cultural community, a figure will be less likely to gain a broader celebrity. Shakira and Daddy Yankee were known largely in the Spanish-speaking world before becoming popular in English-speaking communities, by performing English language songs. Similarly, Spanish actors Penlope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, who were country-level celebrities in their native Spain, were able to become global celebrities only after they became Hollywood actors in English-speaking films.
